DaVinci Resolve AI Tools in Resolve 21: What Works, Free vs Studio
What AI tools DaVinci Resolve 21 adds (IntelliSearch, Speech Generator, CineFocus, Face Reshaper, Slate ID, UltraSharpen and more), which ones need the paid Studio edition, and what carries over from earlier versions.
DaVinci Resolve 21 adds a set of AI tools: IntelliSearch, Speech Generator, CineFocus, Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper, Blemish Removal, Slate ID, UltraSharpen and Motion Deblur, alongside a new Photo page for stills. The new AI tools come with the paid DaVinci Resolve Studio edition (US$295 list price, perpetual license), as do earlier DaVinci Neural Engine tools such as Magic Mask, IntelliTrack, voice isolation, UltraNR noise reduction and subtitles from audio; the base edition stays free.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is new in Resolve 21 versus 20? | The Photo page for stills and the AI tools listed above. The final 21.0 shipped on June 3, 2026 |
| Which AI tools are not new in 21? | IntelliTrack and ColorSlice arrived in Resolve 19, and subtitles from audio in 18.5 |
| Anything to do before first use? | IntelliSearch, Speech Generator and Slate ID need their AI model downloaded from DaVinci Resolve > Extras Download Manager |
| What does the free edition still do? | Edits and outputs projects up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps |
Blackmagic's Studio comparison page lists the DaVinci Neural Engine tools (facial recognition, Super Scale, Speed Warp, de-interlacing, Magic Mask, Smart Reframe, object removal and scene cut detection), AI voice isolation, the dialogue separator and AI UltraNR noise reduction as Studio features. IntelliTrack (added in Resolve 19) and subtitles from audio (added in 18.5) are Studio features too.

What's New in DaVinci Resolve 21?
Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 21 on April 13, 2026 as a public beta and released the final 21.0 on June 3, 2026. The headline change is the Photo page, which brings Resolve's color tools to still images in both editions; direct capture from tethered Sony and Canon cameras is listed only in the Studio release notes. The AI tools run on the DaVinci Neural Engine, Blackmagic's machine-learning framework.
The AI tools in Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve 21 New Features Guide:
- IntelliSearch: searches your media for people, objects or words in dialogue after a one-time analysis of the media pool.
- Speech Generator: text-to-speech voiceover from Blackmagic voice models or a custom voice built from a short, clean recording.
- CineFocus: a virtual lens that sets a new focal point with adjustable aperture, focal range, bokeh and keyframeable rack focus.
- Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper and Blemish Removal: retouching tools that track a face to age or de-age it, reshape features, or reduce skin blemishes.
- Slate Finder and Slate ID: detect clapperboards in your clips and read scene, take and other slate details into clip metadata.
- UltraSharpen: sharpening for upscaled or slightly out-of-focus footage.
- Motion Deblur: reduces motion blur in video.
These are Studio features. Blackmagic's 21.0 release notes list them under "AI Tools" for DaVinci Resolve Studio, and the free edition's notes don't include them. Studio was US$295 for a new perpetual license at release, according to CG Channel; the 21.0 update is free for existing Studio owners, and the base edition remains free.
IntelliTrack: AI Tracking Since Resolve 19 (Studio)

IntelliTrack is the DaVinci Neural Engine point tracker Blackmagic added in Resolve 19. It works in the Color page window tracker, the Fusion point tracker and the FX tracker, and Blackmagic's guide marks it Studio Version Only. Because it is trained on real-world examples rather than fixed heuristics, Blackmagic says it is less likely to fail when a subject passes behind a brief occlusion, and the Fusion Tracker node now uses it by default.

Subtitles from Audio (Studio, Since 18.5)
Resolve's speech-to-text arrived in DaVinci Resolve 18.5. The auto subtitle feature on the Cut and Edit pages transcribes speech into a subtitle track on the timeline, and the same transcription lets editors search media by what is said. Blackmagic's 18.5 feature list marks it "DaVinci Neural Engine based subtitles from audio in Studio."
Like most AI tools that automate creative work, auto-generated subtitles don't remove the editor from the loop: the transcript is a draft to review, not a finished subtitle track.
If you're building your own AI-assisted media workflows on top of hosted models, latency becomes a design constraint; LLM Latency Benchmarks 2026: 6 Levers to Hit Sub-500ms TTFT covers it in depth.
If you're weighing whether to run transcription or other AI workloads on your own hardware instead of through cloud APIs, 10 Self-Hosted AI Tools That Replace SaaS [2026 Tested] covers the setup-cost versus ongoing-savings tradeoff.
That same dynamic — AI tools doing impressive work while still requiring human judgment at critical moments — plays out in software development contexts too, as I explored recently in AI Code Review Tools 2026 Compared: What Catches Bugs vs What Fakes Confidence, which benchmarks how well these systems actually perform on real codebases versus how confidently they present their results.
IntelliTrack Audio Panning in Fairlight (Studio)
Resolve 19 added IntelliTrack-powered audio panning to video on the Fairlight page, marked Studio Version Only. You place the tracker on a person or object in the Fairlight viewer, and Resolve writes pan automation that follows its movement across the frame; the result can be edited like any other automation curve.
Blackmagic's guide notes two limits: a complex track (for example, someone leaving the frame) may need to be tracked in sections, and left-right and up-down panning can be tracked together but front-back distance cannot yet be tracked at the same time.
For separating voices from the rest of a mix, the tool is the Dialogue Separator, which uses the DaVinci Neural Engine to give separate control over dialogue, background sounds and ambience. Blackmagic lists it, with voice isolation and the music remixer, as a Studio feature.
Color Slice and the Grading Toolbox
ColorSlice isn't an AI tool, and it isn't new in 21: Blackmagic added it in Resolve 19. It is a fixed vector grading tool that cuts the color wheel into six slices (red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow) plus a seventh vector for skin tone, and its Density control adjusts the luminance of more saturated colors to emulate a subtractive film process.
The Free vs. Studio Question
The free edition handles projects up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60 fps, according to Blackmagic's Studio comparison page. The AI tools are where the two editions split most.
DaVinci Resolve Studio is a one-time perpetual license, not a subscription: US$295 for a new license at the 21.0 release, and the 21.0 update was free for existing Studio owners.
Who Should Upgrade to Studio?
A simple way to decide, based on the edition split above:
Buy Studio if: you rely on IntelliTrack AI tracking, automatic subtitles, Magic Mask, voice isolation, tethered camera capture on the Photo page or any of the new Resolve 21 AI tools, since all of them are Studio features.
Stay on the free edition if: you deliver at Ultra HD or below and don't need the AI tools or tethered camera capture.
In short: Resolve 21's AI additions are about finding media (IntelliSearch, Slate ID), generating voiceover (Speech Generator), and fixing faces, focus and sharpness (CineFocus, Face Reshaper, Face Age Transformer, Blemish Removal, UltraSharpen, Motion Deblur). They come with Studio, not the free edition.

DaVinci Resolve 20 vs 21: What Changed?
If you're coming from Resolve 20, most of what's new in 21 is the Photo page and the AI tools listed above. IntelliTrack and ColorSlice arrived in Resolve 19 and subtitles from audio in 18.5, so they are not new in 21.
The Concrete Differences That Matter Day-to-Day
Blackmagic lists earlier DaVinci Neural Engine tools such as Magic Mask, Smart Reframe and Speed Warp as Studio features. What version 21 adds on top:
- IntelliSearch: media search for people, objects and words in dialogue (new in 21).
- Speech Generator: text-to-speech, including a custom voice from a 10–20 second sample (new in 21).
- CineFocus, UltraSharpen and Motion Deblur: focus and sharpness repair (new in 21).
- Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper, Blemish Removal, Slate Finder and Slate ID (new in 21).
- Photo page: still-image grading with Resolve's color tools (new in 21, not AI). Direct capture from tethered Sony and Canon cameras is Studio-only.
Tools you may already know, such as IntelliTrack (Resolve 19), ColorSlice (Resolve 19) and subtitles from audio (Resolve 18.5), carry over rather than arrive in 21.
DaVinci Resolve 21 Free vs Studio: Which License Do You Need?
The licensing question is simpler than it looks. The new AI tools in 21 are Studio features, and so are most of the older Neural Engine tools, so if your workflow depends on any of them you need Studio.
What Studio Adds
Blackmagic's comparison page lists what Studio adds: DaVinci Neural Engine tools (facial recognition, Super Scale, Speed Warp, de-interlacing, Magic Mask, Smart Reframe, object removal and scene cut detection), AI voice isolation, the music remixer and dialogue separator, 45 extra Resolve FX including AI UltraNR noise reduction, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ grading and rendering, and resolutions up to 32K at up to 120 fps using multiple GPUs.
- Free: projects up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60 fps.
- Studio adds: the Resolve 21 AI tools, tethered camera capture on the Photo page, IntelliTrack, subtitles from audio, Magic Mask, voice isolation, UltraNR, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ grading and higher resolutions.
- Price: Studio is a perpetual license, US$295 new at the 21.0 release, with the 21.0 update free for existing owners.
- Platforms: Resolve 21.0 supports Windows 10 or later, Rocky Linux 8.6 and macOS 15.0 or later.
How the DaVinci Neural Engine Works (And Why It Matters for AI Features)
The AI tools in Resolve run on the DaVinci Neural Engine, Blackmagic's machine-learning framework. In Resolve 21, tools such as IntelliSearch, Speech Generator and Slate ID need their AI model downloaded from DaVinci Resolve > Extras Download Manager before first use.
What the Neural Engine Does in Each Feature
- IntelliTrack: trained on real-world examples rather than fixed rules, which Blackmagic says makes it less likely to fail through brief occlusions.
- IntelliSearch: analyzes the media pool once in Faster or Better mode (Better takes longer to analyze but is more accurate), then searches near-instantly.
- Speech Generator: works best with shorter sentences or paragraphs; a custom voice needs 10–20 seconds of clean audio.
- Face Age Transformer: identifies and tracks a face, then applies an age offset you set.
Blackmagic's own guide documents the edge cases: Speech Generator can drift when the input text is too long, Face Age Transformer may occasionally affect regions beyond the face, Face Age Transformer can be thrown off by intentionally dirty or shadowed faces, and Blemish Removal by intentionally dirty ones.
Hardware and System Requirements
Resolve 21.0 runs on Windows 10 or later, Rocky Linux 8.6 and macOS 15.0 or later. The free edition edits and outputs projects up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at 60 fps (it can still use higher-resolution source media), while Studio goes up to 32K at 120 fps and can use multiple GPUs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the new features in DaVinci Resolve 21?
Two things stand out: a Photo page that applies Resolve's grading tools to still images, and a batch of AI tools for search, voiceover and face or focus repair. Fusion also gains the Krokodove motion-graphics library, and Fairlight gets folder tracks. Tethered Sony and Canon capture on the Photo page needs Studio.
What are the AI tools in DaVinci Resolve 21?
Nine are new: IntelliSearch and Slate ID for finding footage, Speech Generator for voiceover, and CineFocus, UltraSharpen, Motion Deblur, Face Age Transformer, Face Reshaper and Blemish Removal for repairs. All of them sit on the Studio side of Blackmagic's 21.0 release notes, so they need the paid edition (US$295, one-time).
What is the DaVinci Neural Engine?
Blackmagic's machine-learning layer inside Resolve. Every AI feature runs on it, from older tools like Magic Mask and IntelliTrack to the Resolve 21 additions. Some new tools need a one-time model download (DaVinci Resolve > Extras Download Manager) before they work.
What is IntelliTrack AI in DaVinci Resolve 21?
An AI point tracker that arrived in Resolve 19, so it isn't new in 21. You'll find it in the Color page window tracker, Fusion and the FX tracker, and Fairlight can turn a tracked subject into audio pan automation. It's Studio-only.
What AI features does DaVinci Resolve have?
Two generations of them. Resolve 21 brought search, voiceover and face or focus repair tools; earlier versions added Magic Mask, Smart Reframe, Speed Warp, Super Scale, IntelliTrack, voice isolation, UltraNR and subtitles from audio. Blackmagic lists all of them as Studio features.
What is DaVinci Resolve 21 AI voice feature?
Speech Generator, under Timeline > AI Tools. Type text and it reads it out in one of Blackmagic's voices, or in a custom voice cloned from 10–20 seconds of clean audio; short sentences work best. To clean up recorded dialogue instead, use Studio's voice isolation or dialogue separator.
